What reviewers say about the REI Co-op Base Camp 4 Tent

Two whitelisted outlets cover the exact REI Co-op Base Camp 4, both favorably. CleverHiker hands-on field-tested it (riding out springtime gales dry) within an REI-sponsored gear roundup, praising elite interior storage and rain protection while flagging the fussy five-pole setup. GearJunkie's commentary on the 4-person model appears in 'Compare' callout boxes attached to competitor reviews (Big Agnes Bunk House and Marmot Limestone) inside its 2026 best-camping-tents roundup, whose lead REI pick is the 6-person version; it praises the Base Camp 4's wind-shedding geodesic frame and 150-denier floor while flagging the low 60-inch peak. No source reported a tester-measured number; the dimensions cited are spec-sheet figures.

Tested by CleverHiker, GearJunkie

Consistently praised

  • Strong weather protection: CleverHiker rode out rainstorms and gales without leaks, and GearJunkie rates its wind-shedding pole frame the equal of the storm-proof Marmot Limestone above 30 mph · 2 sources
  • Rugged, mountaineering-grade build with a heavy-duty 150-denier floor and 3.5-season rating
  • Abundant interior storage with pockets from bottom to top

Commonly flagged

  • Slower, fussier setup: five poles run through pole sleeves, requiring patience and dexterity
  • Low ~60-inch peak height; campers over five feet tall cannot stand fully upright

Where reviewers disagree No cross-source contradiction; the two are complementary rather than conflicting. The honest caveat is depth of testing: CleverHiker physically used the 4-person tent in the field, but inside an REI-sponsored guide, while GearJunkie hands-on tested only the 6-person Base Camp, so its Base Camp 4 remarks are spec-informed comparison callouts rather than a dedicated test of the 4P. Every quantitative dimension cited (60-inch peak, 150-denier floor, 3.5-season rating) is a spec-sheet figure, not a tester-measured value, which is why no measured numbers are recorded.

CleverHiker lab-tested ·

The REI Base Camp 4 has some of the best storage we've ever seen for a four-person camping tent.
this is the camping tent we would most want to be in in a rainstorm. We rode out some springtime gales without any precipitation seeping through.
It takes a little more time to set up than average; there are five poles that run through pole sleeves, which takes some patience and dexterity.

GearJunkie hands-on ·

The Base Camp 4 is the mountain-grade choice, trading the standing-room height of the Bunkhouse for raw structural integrity.
The Base Camp 4 is the only front-country tent that can go toe-to-toe with the Limestone when the wind starts gusting over 30 mph.
You lose the ability to stand fully upright if you're over five feet tall
