The steepest premium tax we found is $12,901 on the Kohler 24RCLA — a cheaper product meets or beats it on every spec we track. Across 58 categories the median premium is $460.

Method & data
For each category we rank products by spec strength with price removed from the ranking. The badge pick is the most expensive product we can spec-compare; the value pick is the cheapest product whose price-blind spec score meets or beats it. The premium tax is simply the difference in price. This ranks on the specs we track — the pricier product may still lead on brand, ecosystem, build quality, or a feature we don't track, so we never call it a bad product; we only show that you can get equal or stronger tracked specs for less. To keep every callout fair we include a category only where there are ≥6 priced products, the premium is at least $60 and 40%, the price ratio is no more than 8×, and the value pick meets or beats the badge on ≥2 concrete tracked specs — 58 categories qualify. Every figure is dated and linked to its source on the product page. Current as of 2026-08-09.
Honest caveat: "meets or beats" is measured on the tracked specs listed beside each row, with price removed from the ranking. A higher price can still buy something real we don't score — a stronger warranty network, better software, a nicer finish, or a capability outside our spec set — so read this as "you can pay less for equal-or-stronger tracked specs", not "the expensive one is worse". The full dated data behind every figure is public, so any row here can be checked line by line.
