What reviewers say about the Amazon eero Max 7

Both hands-on lab testers (Tom's Guide, Tom's Hardware) rate the eero Max 7 among the fastest routers up close but agree throughput drops sharply at distance and key features sit behind a ~$99/year eero Plus paywall. Both sources fully verified against fetched text.

Based on 2 reviews · 2 lab-tested · 2023-11-01–2023-11-17

Tested by Tom's Guide, Tom's Hardware

Consistently praised

  • Excellent close-range Wi-Fi 7 throughput (2+ Gbps near the node) · 2 sources
  • Simple, fast app-based setup · 2 sources
  • Attractive tower design with two 10Gbps ports · 2 sources

Commonly flagged

  • Performance falls off quickly at longer distances · 2 sources
  • Security, parental controls and stats require paid eero Plus subscription (~$99/year) · 2 sources
  • Lacks advanced configuration options and has no web interface · 2 sources
  • Expensive (up to $1,699/$1,700 for a three-pack) · 2 sources

Where reviewers disagree No direct contradiction between the two testers; they used different client devices and benchmarks (Tom's Guide IxChariot + iPerf3, Tom's Hardware iPerf3) but reached the same up-close-strong, distance-weak conclusion.

Tom's Guide lab-tested ·

6GHz throughput at 15 feet: 1.781Gbps · throughput at 50 feet: 146.9Mbps · throughput at 75 feet: 132.7Mbps · throughput at 90 feet: 16.8Mbps · IxChariot throughput next to router (OnePlus 11, Wi-Fi 7): 2.567Gbps · maximum range: 95 feet · router power draw under load: 19.1 watts

With the ability to push a lot of data close up, eero's Max 7 has everything most home users crave, but its performance doesn't hold up at longer distances and extra security as well as parental controls require a paid subscription.
It may not breach the 2Gbps barrier, but the Max 7's throughput is nonetheless very impressive, particularly up close.
After using the Max 7 for two weeks in my 100-year old 3,500 square foot home, its throughput fell off quickly at real world distances. The three devices left several dead zones at the extremities of my home.

Tom's Hardware lab-tested ·

OnePlus 11 (Wi-Fi 7) iPerf3 at 6 feet from Office node: 2.02 Gbps · OnePlus 11 (Wi-Fi 7) at 25 feet (multiple walls): 327 Mbps · MacBook Pro (Wi-Fi 6, 5GHz) at 6 feet from Office node: 735 Mbps · iPhone 15 Pro Max (Wi-Fi 6E) at close range, Office node: 1.42 Gbps · latency on Office/gateway node: less than 7ms

The Eero Max 7 performed admirably and delivered among the fastest speeds we've ever seen in a wireless router.
Key features locked behind a paywall
there is no web interface for power users, and there aren't many advanced settings for users to tweak the mesh network to their liking
