The Testing Gap
A census of our evidence ledger: how many of the 4,764 products we track carry an independent measured result on record from the 54 outlets we cite.
Of the 4,764 products we track across 359 gear categories, 1,461 (31%) have at least one hands-on review on record from the 54 independent outlets we cite. 653 of those — 45% of everything reviewed — carry a review on record but no instrumented measurement on record in our corpus. 69 products (1% of what we track) have measurements on record from three or more independent labs. This is a coverage census of our evidence ledger, not a verdict on any product.

The remaining 247 categories each have fewer than 6 reviewed products on record — combined: 2,817 products, 420 reviewed, 177 with a measurement on record.
What this can and can't tell you
- Coverage of OUR ledger only. What a zero means here: our corpus is reviews harvested from 54 whitelisted, text-fetchable outlets. Labs that render only in JavaScript (RTINGS, for example) and paywalled reviews are systematically absent — our pipeline drops what it cannot verify. A product with nothing on record here may well have been tested somewhere we can't index. These numbers measure our evidence ledger, not the world.
- "Reviewed on record" means a verified hands-on review from a whitelisted outlet — roundup mentions never count. "Measured" means the tester published at least one instrumented value (a battery time, a decibel figure, a brightness reading) that our pipeline confirmed verbatim in the review text.
- Shares are reported against REVIEWED products on record (the denominator is named wherever a share appears); a share is only shown for categories with at least 6 reviewed products on record — a percentage over a smaller denominator is noise dressed as precision.
- This census describes our ledger's evidence coverage, never product quality: heavily measured is not better, and nothing on record is not worse.
