An AI receptionist replaces or augments a human front desk. A caller speaks normally; the system transcribes speech, runs it through a language model against the business's instructions and knowledge, and responds in a synthesized voice — often booking into a calendar, capturing a lead, or escalating to a person when needed.
The label covers two very different commercial shapes that look alike on a vendor's homepage. Packaged answering services sell flat monthly tiers with included minutes or calls (and an overage rate for going over). Developer voice platforms sell the raw infrastructure per minute, with telephony and model usage billed on top — cheap at low volume, but the marginal rate is what governs the bill. The two cross over as call volume rises, which is why a headline sticker price tells a buyer almost nothing until it is normalized to a real workload.
For a buyer, the questions that actually decide cost are: what is included before overage starts, what the per-minute or per-call rate is beyond that, and whether regulated requirements (HIPAA, a signed BAA) are met — most vendors say nothing about the last point on their public pages.
