What reviewers say about the Char-Griller AKORN Kamado

One whitelisted tester — Reviewed (USA Today) — hands-on tested this exact model (Char-Griller E16620 Akorn) and named it Best Value: it cooks just as well as a more expensive kamado and is very easy to clean, but struggles to hold low smoking temperatures and may not last as long as pricier ceramic kamados.

Tested by Reviewed

Consistently praised

  • Works just as well as a more expensive kamado at a fraction of the cost (Best Value pick)
  • Cast-iron grates deliver nice sear marks over direct heat
  • Very easy to clean — the entire bottom unhooks to dump ash
  • Lightweight and inexpensive

Commonly flagged

  • Hard to reach low smoking temperatures; floor around 275°F with a learning curve
  • Smokin' Stone deflector plate is smaller than the grate, so food on the edges over-chars
  • Build quality and durability lag pricier kamados
  • Weaker warranty (5-year hood/firebox, 1-year on ash pan and parts) vs limited-lifetime rivals

Where reviewers disagree Single hands-on source, so no cross-tester comparison is possible; Reviewed's own verdict is itself split — it works as well as costlier kamados but likely won't last as long.

lowest cooking temperature the Akorn reached in hands-on testing: ~275°F

With grates made from cast iron instead of stainless steel, the Akorn provides nice sear marks when using the grill over direct heat.
Cleaning the grill is another top feature. The entire bottom of the grill unhooks, making it a breeze to dump out spent ashes.
Its temperature control uses the same draft door system as our main pick, although it was difficult to reach the low temperatures I could achieve with the Egg.
