What reviewers say about the VS3

Only one whitelisted tester (Tom's Guide) published a hands-on lab review of the Varia VS3. It rates the grinder an Editor's Choice for espresso beginners: affordable, easy to dial in, quiet (67dB average), very low retention (0.15g avg from a 20g dose) and premium build/styling for the price. Documented flaws are lower grind uniformity at medium-coarse/coarse settings and a DC power supply that grinds slowly (170RPM) and needs a cumbersome charging brick. No cross-source corroboration exists.

Tested by Tom's Guide

Consistently praised

  • Affordable and very easy to dial in — ideal for espresso beginners
  • Low retention (0.15g avg from 20g dose) and consistent espresso-fine grinds
  • Quiet operation, measured at 67dB average
  • Premium build quality and styling that belies the entry-level price

Commonly flagged

  • Uniformity drops off at medium-coarse/coarse grinds; not ideal for pour-over or coarse brew methods
  • DC power supply means slow grinding (170RPM) plus a cumbersome, ugly charging brick
  • Static-heavy out of the box until burrs season (~2kg of beans)

Where reviewers disagree No cross-source disagreement is possible — only a single whitelisted tester (Tom's Guide) has a hands-on lab review of this exact model, so every praised and flagged point rests on one source.

The Varia VS3 is the ideal grinder for newcomers to espresso.
In my testing, it averaged 67dB, so quieter than my Eureka Mignon Specialita (75dB) and much more morning friendly than the Baratza Encore ESP (82dB).
The Varia VS3's only Achilles heel is its power supply.

Source: variabrewing.com (verified 2026-07-07) · corroborated by wholelattelove.com. The official Varia Brewing product page (accessed 2026-07-07) states verbatim in its SPECIFICATIONS: "Burr Size/Type: 48mm conical, 6-core" (Base Material: high-nitrogen 420 stainless steel, HRC58), "Grind Setting: Stepless adjustment with 10-micron vertical burr shift", "Hopper Capacity: 30g", "Motor: 100W DC motor / 170 RPM load speed", and "Weight: 3.5kg" (= 7.7 lb), with price "US$ 269.90"; the copy describes it as a compact electric grinder engineered for both espresso and filter brewing (best_for=all). Whole Latte Love (US retailer, accessed 2026-07-07) corroborates the same VS3 model as a compact single-dose grinder with upgradable conical burrs at $269.00, and its spec table lists "Weight (Lbs): 7.7" and "Recommended Grind Selection: All Grinds". Note: the source's SPECIFICATIONS explicitly lists the burr as 48mm (the page separately notes a 38mm inner diameter and the burr-upgrade sets are 38mm; the WLL table lists "Burr Diameter (mm): 38mm"), so burr_size_mm=48 is retained as it is the value verbatim in the primary source's spec sheet. Neither fetched page states an explicit release year, so releaseDate and the release spec are left null. Weight in lb is converted from the manufacturer's stated 3.5kg (3.5kg = 7.72 lb, rounds to 7.7) and matches WLL's explicit 7.7 lb.
