What reviewers say about the Kamado Joe Classic III

Only one whitelisted tester, Reviewed (USA Today), hands-on tested the exact Kamado Joe Classic III; its professional-chef reviewer wasn't impressed, placing it in the 'Other Kamado Grills We Tested' tier behind the Big Green Egg and Char-Griller Akorn. She praised the bundled accessories and easy-to-clean ash drawer but flagged a heavy lid that won't stay open and a screenless draft door. No other whitelisted tester reviewed this exact model.

Consistently praised

  • Purchase price bundles several accessories: a stand, drop-down shelves, and a two-tier flexible cooking system with half-moon cooking grates and deflector plates (which double as a pizza stone)
  • Easy-to-remove ash drawer sits inside the firebox, making cleanout much easier
  • Lid locks in place when closed with an easy release button to 'burp' the grill on opening

Commonly flagged

  • Heavy lid doesn't stay open; the air-lift hinge adjustment isn't intuitive and may cause problems
  • Draft door has no screen, risking live coals escaping the grill
  • Drop-down side shelves don't sit flat, resting at an upward angle

Where reviewers disagree Single-source only, so no cross-source corroboration is possible. Reviewed's chef tester ranked the Kamado Joe Classic III below the Big Green Egg Large (Best Overall) and the Char-Griller Akorn (Best Value) in the same hands-on roundup, but no other whitelisted tester published a hands-on review of this exact model to confirm or dispute that verdict.

I do appreciate that the purchase price includes several accessories, including a stand, drop-down shelves, and a two-tier flexible cooking system complete with half-moon cooking grates and deflector plates for indirect heat cooking.
Many people look to the Kamado Joe Classic III Charcoal Grill as an alternative to the Big Green Egg, but I wasn't too impressed with this kamado grill.
What's concerning about this grill is that the draft door doesn't have a screen, which could create a potentially dangerous situation that could allow live coals to make their way out of the grill.

Price (US)$2199.99 US MSRP $2,199.99 from the Kamado Joe official store for "Classic Joe® Grill - Series III" (Model KJ15040921) — the Series III trim that includes the heavy-duty powder-coated steel grill cart and folding aluminum side shelves (page also lists a $1,999.99 standalone-no-cart variant and a $2,379.99 soapstone bundle). The Amazon listing for the same model showed no US featured offer (EUR pricing only), so the price is taken from the manufacturer.

Source: kamadojoe.com (verified 2026-07-11) · corroborated by amazon.com. The Kamado Joe official product page (Model KJ15040921, "Classic Joe® Grill - Series III", Size Classic Joe 18") confirms the exact model and lists the Series III bundle with the powder-coated steel cart at $2,199.99, along with specs: 18-in cooking surface diameter, 250 in² cooking space, 225–750°F heat range, premium ceramic grill, 3-Tier Divide & Conquer system, Air Lift hinge, and folding aluminum side shelves. The Amazon listing for the identical Model KJ15040921 ("Classic Joe III w/ stand") corroborates the model identity, Number of Racks 3, the 225F-to-750F range, included side shelves, and a Limited Lifetime warranty, but had no US featured price (EUR only) so price comes from the manufacturer. Wall thickness and a cart-excluded body weight are not disclosed on either fetched page — the manufacturer's "Grill Weight 280.6 lb" and Amazon's "Item Weight 286 lb" are divergent whole-unit figures that appear to include the cart — and the ceramic body carries a lifetime warranty, so weightLbs, wallThicknessIn, and warrantyBodyYears are null.
