TechRadar hands-on ·

Like most Apple products, it just works.
Depending on the track you're listening to, it can get a touch muddy.
The 3.5mm audio jack is no more which is frustrating for anyone looking to connect it to larger speakers.

What Hi-Fi hands-on ·

the sonic experience is somewhat remarkable when you also consider the Dot's remarkably slim price tag and unobtrusive design
There's certainly weight at the lower register, even if some of the detail gets lost in the mud
the Echo Dot starts to struggle and distort whenever the knob gets turned towards the upper echelons

Tom's Guide hands-on ·

Elton John's "Bennie and the Jets" thumped better than I've come to expect for a speaker this size.
However, at the highest volume, the speaker's sound quality and bass performance deteriorates.
the latest Echo Dot ditches the 3.5mm audio line out, so you can no longer pair it to a stronger-sounding speaker

SoundGuys hands-on ·

The speaker also sounds pretty good at low-medium levels.
the Echo Dot sounds like a blown-out mess pretty quickly if you crank it up
It's hard to find what you need in this app, and that's a problem.
