What reviewers say about the Nikon Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S

Only one whitelisted tester, TechRadar, returned a real hands-on review of this exact original model. TechRadar rates it excellent: stellar wide-open sharpness, fast near-silent autofocus and strong build, faulting vignetting, distortion and a non-clickable control ring.

Based on 1 review · 2019-05-09

Tested by TechRadar

Consistently praised

  • Stellar sharpness even wide open at f/2.8, maintained superbly to the edges
  • Fast, smooth and almost silent autofocus motor
  • Excellent build quality and weather sealing

Commonly flagged

  • Moderate vignetting at wider apertures, not auto-corrected by the built-in raw profile
  • Barrel and pincushion distortion visible when lens corrections are disabled
  • De-clicked control ring cannot be switched to clicked operation

Where reviewers disagree Single whitelisted source, so no cross-outlet comparison is possible; TechRadar's verdict is uniformly positive, treating the vignetting and distortion as easily corrected in-camera or via the raw profile rather than as real optical dealbreakers.

TechRadar hands-on ·

Handling is great, autofocus is beautifully smooth and fast, and detail is exceptional.
This is a lens that will no doubt be used for many images at its widest f/2.8 aperture, so it's great to find that sharpness is superb here.
A moderate amount of vignetting is perhaps most noticeable of all, so it's a shame this isn't automatically corrected by the profile too.

Source: nikonusa.com (verified 2026-07-11) · corroborated by en.wikipedia.org. The Nikon USA product page (title "NIKKOR Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S", product 20089/20064) confirms this is the original S lens — not the newer 24-70mm f/2.8 S II — and lists a US price of $2,399.95 plus focal length 24-70mm, constant f/2.8, Nikon Z mount, FX (full-frame) format, 9 diaphragm blades, 0.22x max reproduction ratio, 0.38m minimum focus, 82mm filter, and 805g weight; its comparison chart shows the lens depends on in-camera (in-body) image stabilization, i.e. it has no built-in optical VR. Wikipedia's List of Nikon Z-mount lenses independently corroborates 0.38m min focus, 82mm filter, 805g weight and VR "No", and gives release date 2019-02-14 in a row distinct from the 2025 S II variant. Weather-sealing was not stated as an explicit spec on either fetched page, so it is left null.
