What reviewers say about the Asus ROG Ally X

All three whitelisted testers (Tom's Hardware, Engadget, TechPowerUp) rate the 2024 ROG Ally X the best Windows handheld at launch, praising its doubled 80Wh battery, 24GB RAM performance gains and comfier grips. All flag the $799 price and clunky Windows. A newer rival (MSI Claw 8) later out-lasted its battery. Excludes the separate 2025 Xbox Ally X.

Consistently praised

  • Doubled 80Wh battery delivers much longer runtime than the original Ally · 3 sources
  • 24GB of faster RAM lifts gaming performance on the same Z1 Extreme chip · 2 sources
  • Improved ergonomics, larger grips and better build comfort · 2 sources
  • Bright 120Hz 1080p display · 2 sources

Commonly flagged

  • $799/$800 price is steep, especially versus the cheaper Steam Deck · 2 sources
  • Windows 11 still feels clunky with a controller on a small handheld screen · 2 sources
  • Armoury Crate software remains buggy / less cohesive than SteamOS · 2 sources
  • No Hall effect joysticks included

Where reviewers disagree At 2024 launch Tom's Hardware and Engadget called the 80Wh battery best-in-class; TechPowerUp's later Sept 2025 test found it couldn't match the newer MSI Claw 8's runtimes, so the battery advantage eroded as rivals arrived.

Battery life (web browsing/video/OpenGL, 150 nits): 8 h 19 min · Metro Exodus stress test avg (720p, DX12, low): 107.77 fps · CPU temp during Metro Exodus stress test: 71.87 C · Alan Wake II (960x540, low, 30W turbo, FSR2): ~34 fps · Weight: 678 g (1.49 lb)

The Asus ROG Ally X is the best Windows gaming handheld out there right now, with a big battery, solid ergonomics, and lots of RAM to help boost performance.
It ran for 8 hours and 19 minutes on our test, browsing the web, streaming video and running OpenGL benchmarks at 150 nits, far ahead of the original Ally at 5:51.
But Windows still isn't perfect, and $799.99 is a lot to ask, especially when the Steam Deck is priced competitively.

Engadget lab-tested ·

Display peak brightness (measured review unit): ~515 nits · Shadow of the Tomb Raider (720p, high, Turbo mode): 64 fps · Cyberpunk 2077 (Turbo mode): 78 fps

Thanks to some subtle design tweaks and major hardware upgrades, ASUS has turned the ROG Ally X into the flagship Windows gaming handheld it was meant to be.
It has great brightness with a peak of around 500 nits (our review unit was actually a touch better at around 515 nits) and a variable 120Hz refresh rate.
Really, the biggest hurdle for the Ally X is its price. At $800, it costs $150 more than the original Ally or the closest equivalent Steam Deck.

TechPowerUp lab-tested ·

Gaming battery life at 10 W (50% brightness): ~5 hours · Gaming battery life at 25 W: 2 hours · Wi-Fi download speed (Steam): ~350 Mbit/s

At 10 W, you can game for almost five hours before needing a charge. At 15 W, the battery will last more than three hours, while you can expect to game for almost two and a half hours at 20 W.
At the end of the day we're impressed with the uptimes on the ROG Ally X.
Despite having the same-sized, 80 Wh battery and a smaller screen that's not as bright, the ASUS ROG Ally X wasn't able to match the numbers put out by the MSI Claw 8.
