What reviewers say about the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080

Three whitelisted labs (TechPowerUp, Tom's Hardware, Notebookcheck) benchmarked the RTX 5080 Founders Edition. Consensus: a well-built, power-efficient, quiet $999 card that comfortably beats the RX 7900 XTX, but only ~14-22% faster than the RTX 4080 Super/FE in raster, making it a weak generational upgrade. All three flag the 16GB VRAM and modest gen-over-gen gains.

Consistently praised

  • Strong power efficiency, drawing well under its 360W rating in gaming (325W measured by TechPowerUp) · 2 sources
  • Runs cool and quiet with the compact dual-slot Founders Edition cooler · 2 sources
  • DLSS 4 Transformer upscaling and multi-frame generation are a genuine step up · 2 sources
  • Clearly outperforms the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX, especially in ray tracing · 2 sources

Commonly flagged

  • Only small performance gains over the RTX 4080 Super / 4080 (roughly 14-22%) · 3 sources
  • Still limited to 16GB of VRAM, a constraint for heavy path tracing and AI · 3 sources
  • No compelling reason to upgrade from an existing RTX 4080-class card · 2 sources

Where reviewers disagree Testers report different raster uplift figures over the prior-gen 80-class card depending on comparison point and game suite: TechPowerUp measured +14% vs the 4080 Super, while Notebookcheck measured +22% in 4K gaming vs the original 4080 FE. Both agree the generational jump is smaller than expected.

At 4K resolution, with pure rasterization, without ray tracing or DLSS, we measured a 14% performance uplift over the RTX 4080 Super, 15% over the RTX 4080 non-Super. This is definitely MUCH less than expected
With a gaming power draw of 325 W, the RTX 5080 is very well-behaved and can claim the title of most power efficient graphics card (in gaming).
I tested Transformer and I'm in love. The image quality is so good, "Quality" looks like native, sometimes better.

From a performance standpoint, the RTX 5080 FE offers significant 19% and 22% gains over the RTX 4080 FE in synthetics and 4K gaming, respectively while the corresponding uplifts from the Radeon RX 7900 XTX are 7% and 17%.
the 16 GB VRAM limitation means that very intense path tracing settings at high resolutions can potentially bring the RTX 5080 FE to its knees.
If you already own an RTX 4080 Super or even the original RTX 4080, there's no immediate reason to jump on to the RTX 5080 bandwagon.
