What reviewers say about the Framework Laptop 13 (AMD Ryzen AI 300, 2025)

Across three whitelisted testers (Tom's Hardware and PCWorld lab-tested; Engadget hands-on only), the Ryzen AI 300 refresh is a solid, highly repairable ultraportable let down by battery life and fan noise. The two lab tests measured 9-11 hours of runtime, well behind rivals. Note Tom's Hardware and PCWorld tested different CPU tiers of the same 2025 AI 300 line (HX 370 vs Ryzen AI 7 350).

Based on 3 reviews · 2 lab-tested · 2025-04-17–2025-05-06

Tested by Tom's Hardware, PCWorld, Engadget

Consistently praised

  • Unmatched modularity, repairability and cheaper mainboard-only upgrade path · 3 sources
  • Strong CPU/productivity performance, clear step up over prior Intel/AMD boards · 2 sources
  • Bright, sharp 120Hz IPS display (480-540 nits measured) · 2 sources

Commonly flagged

  • Poor battery life, trails competitors by hours (9h11m and just over 11h measured) · 3 sources
  • High up-front price near $2,000, costlier than faster rivals · 2 sources
  • Persistent fan noise and heat under load · 2 sources

Where reviewers disagree Testers split on battery figures by test type: Tom's Hardware measured only 9h11m in a mixed web/video/OpenGL run (worse than the prior Intel model), while PCWorld got just over 11 hours in a lighter 4K-video-playback test; both still rank it well behind rivals. Engadget ran no benchmarks and reported battery only subjectively ('not anything close to a full day').

Tom's Hardware lab-tested ·

Battery life (web browsing/video/OpenGL, 150 nits): 9 hours 11 minutes · Display brightness: 482.6 nits · Geekbench 6 single-core: 2,894 · Geekbench 6 multi-core: 12,924 · Cinebench 2024 (first run / stabilized): 814.84 / 857-865 · Handbrake 4K-to-1080p transcode: 4 minutes 18 seconds · DCI-P3 coverage: 83.6 percent · Weight: 2.87 pounds · Underside skin temp (Cinebench stress): 133 degrees F

Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 gives the Framework Laptop 13 a performance injection, but battery life suffers.
The Laptop 13 lasted just 9 hours and 11 minutes, less than even the 9 hours and 59 minutes we achieved when equipped with an Intel Core Ultra processor.
Framework continues to be in a class of its own regarding laptop customization options.

PCWorld lab-tested ·

Display brightness: almost 540 nits · Contrast (IPS): 1710:1 · sRGB coverage: 100 percent · DCI-P3 coverage: 86 percent · Battery life (4K video playback): just over 11 hours · Typing speed (Monkeytype): 121 words per minute, 98 percent accuracy

The screen gets incredibly bright, reaching almost 540 nits in my testing.
In our 4K video playback test, the Framework Laptop 13 ran for just over 11 hours. The next closest machine was the Lenovo Yoga Slim 9i 14, which beat it by more than 2 hours
The Framework Laptop 13 is a good laptop all around, but without factoring in its key differentiating feature, it fails to ascend to greatness.

Engadget hands-on ·

And while AMD promised the 300 AI was designed to be more power-efficient, the new processor further dents this thing's battery life. I didn't get anything close to a full day on a charge here
Sadly, as many hours as the company may have put in here, you're still going to have to deal with plenty of fan noise and heat under heavy load.
the best reason to recommend the AMD model over its Intel equivalent is for its greater strength in gaming. After all, you can easily get 50 to 60 fps in titles like Fortnite and Grand Theft Auto V
