What reviewers say about the Apple Watch Ultra 2
Two whitelisted hands-on reviews (DC Rainmaker, Tom's Guide), both dated 2023-09-20; neither ran standardized lab benchmarks, so no measured values. Both call it a modest, iterative upgrade: excellent optical HR and generally strong GPS, brighter 3,000-nit display, but battery still trails dedicated sports watches. All six quotes verified as literal substrings of the fetched pages.

Consistently praised
- Brighter 3,000-nit display (up from 2,000) · 2 sources
- Best-in-class optical heart rate accuracy, on par with Garmin's ELEVATE V5 sensor
- GPS generally in the mix with top multi-band units like Garmin Epix Pro
- Faster future-proof S9 chip and double-tap gesture are welcome
Commonly flagged
- Battery life still lags dedicated sports watches
- GPS had significant, unexplained outliers in dense-city tests
- Only a modest, iterative upgrade over the original Ultra
Where reviewers disagree No direct contradiction. Nuance on GPS: DC Rainmaker found it generally strong but flagged two dense-city tests as significant unexplained outliers, whereas Tom's Guide (a lighter hands-on) described the dual-frequency GPS as having 'proven as accurate as Garmin watches in our testing' without noting any city failures.

In the case of heart rate tracking though, Apple continues to have one of the best optical heart rate sensors on the market, which I’d say is largely a wash between Garmin’s ELEVATE V5 HR sensor at this point.
GPS performance of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is generally in the mix with other top multi-band GPS units, such as the Garmin Epix Pro series. However, the two city tests were significant outliers in that realm, which are relatively unexplained at this time.
The 36-hour claim seems accurate, though probably a bit conservative. I’ve been charging it every other day, even with 45-90 minutes of workout time per day (usually GPS-based).
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 is a modest update over the original, but a brighter display, support for the double-tap gestures and future-proof processor are welcome improvements.
The screen is brighter than before, up to 3,000 nits from 2,000 nits. In direct sunlight the improvement is subtle, but I could see it more clearly than the Apple Watch Series 9.
If you're comparing the Apple Watch Ultra to other sports watches, the battery life continues to pale by comparison.
