What reviewers say about the DJI Osmo Action 3

All four whitelisted reviews - TechRadar, Tom's Guide, Engadget and Digital Trends, each hands-on in 2022 - rate the Osmo Action 3 a strong-value GoPro alternative. All four praise the magnetic quick-release mount and the affordable price; most also credit the rugged 16m-waterproof build, long battery life with fast charging, and the handy touch-enabled front screen. Criticism centers on weak stills (12MP, no night mode) and time-capped long 4K clips; TechRadar and Engadget add that video and low-light quality trail the best GoPros, though Digital Trends rated image quality highly.

Where reviewers disagree Testers split on stabilization: Digital Trends found the Action 3 slightly out-stabilizes the GoPro Hero 11, Engadget rated it 'nearly on par' with GoPro's HyperSmooth 4, and Tom's Guide called it 'just good enough' and less aggressive than HyperSmooth 5.0.

TechRadar lab-tested ·

Max 4K/60fps clip length before overheating stopped recording (hands-on): 16 min 30 sec

Undercutting much of the competition, the DJI Osmo Action 3 may not be the best action camera available, but it could be the best value option for you.
As for audio quality, the DJI Osmo Action 3 captures clean sound from its three microphones, tuning out background and wind noise relatively well.
There isn't even a night mode, so the ultra-wide angle lens on your smartphone will likely capture a superior lowlight photo than DJI's camera.

Tom's Guide lab-tested ·

Total recording time filling a 64GB card / draining one battery (hands-on): ~160 minutes · Freezer recording endurance test: 30 min at 0 degrees Fahrenheit, no issues

With its great video quality and innovative mounting system, the DJI Osmo Action 3 is a solid lower-cost alternative to the GoPro Hero11 Black.
I much prefer the quick-release adapter over GoPro's current design which requires you to remove the thumb screw each time you want to remove the camera from a mount
I found all three modes not quite as comprehensive or aggressive as GoPro's HyperSmooth 5.0 video stabilization

Engadget lab-tested ·

4K/60p continuous recording (hands-on): 60 min, no issues · 4K/120p max recording time (camera warning observed): 9 min

So naturally, I executed a perfect face plant on my mountain bike, and can confirm that the camera came away unscathed, unlike my face (yes, there's video).
Video quality is excellent, at least on par with the Hero 10 at the equivalent resolution
The Hero 10 is better in low light, though. Despite the larger pixels, the Action 3's video can get quite noisy, even in daylight in shaded forest, for instance.

Digital Trends lab-tested ·

The DJI Osmo Action 3 is a great action camera that distinguishes itself with a unique magnetic clip system and an exceptionally rugged design.
it stayed locked and secure on an extension rod out a car window while traveling at 40 mph
the magnetic plates of its unique mounting system have an unfortunate tendency to grab magnetic particles of sand
