Commonly flagged
- Poor low-light performance / grainy footage in dim scenes
- Audio struggles in wind; built-in mics inconsistent
- Mediocre battery life
Where reviewers disagree No direct cross-source conflict. TechRadar (comparing generations) calls it too similar to the Hero 11 to warrant upgrading and rates battery mediocre; Reviewed, testing a GoPro for the first time with no generational baseline, was uniformly impressed and did not independently measure battery, so its enthusiasm reflects a first-time-user lens rather than a contradicting finding.

the Hero 12 Black's stabilization is fantastic, dialing up or down based on what you're doing, thanks to HyperSmooth 6.0 and AutoBoost. It outperforms the DJI Osmo Action 4 in this regard
Low light is where GoPro has consistently dropped the ball, and while the Light Painting night modes are fun additions, they don't make up for the grainy video when recording in dimly-lit scenes.
out and about in the UK and Berlin, in around 70F / 20C ambient temperatures, I shot for over 30 minutes at 5.3K without any issues.
As I was rolling over rocks and navigating ruts and roots alike, the Hero12 was showcasing its HyperSmooth 6.0 video stabilization feature
But as soon as those elements took a turn, or rather as soon as I took a turn into the elements, the microphones could not keep up.
the Hero12 captured my initial bike ride in stunning, crisp detail. From weaving through trees to riding on a ridge overlooking a vast, expansive valley, the Hero12 picked up everything with incredible clarity and vibrant colors.
